Rants 8/Jul/2025 part 2

“Toon community” talk about the mere visuals/animation like how game journalists talk about gameplay.

“This game/cartoon has too much gameplay/animation, it’s so tryhard”.

“What about the plot/story? A good story comes first”.

The key element is that, much like game journos, cartoon fans don’t even know what is “good writing”.

At best, it could mean “Well Written Dialogue” (Even though they don’t say anything about shitty Millenial writerspeak).

Or in actually, they prefer when a show is written in a way that makes it easier to fandom over.

It’s like how in the world of art/illustrations, you can have a painting with a lot of skillful drawings and details and images vs a bunch of simple shapes and splatters.

Then someone comes to you and tells you “the drawing on the right is better because of its supposed deep message”.

Nihilism and "playing God"

In my opinion, “playing God” isn’t when say a crazy scientist tries to create a new species or shit like that.

It’s when someone says the typical shit about “survival of the fittest”, “natural selection”, “life has no meaning” etc.

The “deep philosophical truths” that you’ve heard a million times.

Because at the end of the day, they’re still on the same level as you: Other humans that will die and be forgotten by time etc.

Because there’s a lot of ways you can take this like thinking that “personality” in itself is meaningless, so you can forget your interests just because.

Because if nothing has meaning, neither does these statements about how nothing has meaning.

If there’s nothing wrong with saying this shit, there’s also nothing wrong with having interests in anything: Like me wanting to play a game and eat my granola cereal/greek yogurt combo once in a while.

Deep down, everyone has their own interests and things to care about even if they don’t cure cancer or solve world hunger.

And speaking of survival of the fittest: The fact that humans are meaningless means that sometimes, that doesn’t matter either.

In some cases, a muscular healthy man that looks like a Greek God can die before a weak skinny loser, with a less than ideal physique.

Look at sloths: A bunch of ugly slow animals that somehow still exist, meanwhile they had stronger relative species that die years ago.

This is also the irony of eugenics: If nature did favor the strong, you wouldn’t come up with a program meant to erase who you deem “weak” to begin with.

Sometimes, “nothing matters” can go in ways that not even the people that say it even realize.

Which is why I sometimes doubt people actually believe this as much.

(That and some shit about how Friedrich Nietzsche is often misunderstood or something).

Also remi related but after hearing a “double lost” SleepyCast episode: Holy shit, Shadman is such a tryhard when he talks and it even drove Jeff telling him to fuck off.

Can’t believe he got to be in like 9 episodes of what could’ve been one of the best podcasts ever.

Edit: Also almost forgot but evolution is also why humans started to cooperate in general.

Kids stuff being shit

Once in a while, someone complains about how kids stuff nowadays (Like movies) is bad and how kids deserve better.

But I also wonder how many people look back at what they watched as kids and realized some of the stuff sucked.

Because I get that feeling when I look at what I watched when I was young and it’s part of why I’m glad to discover stuff that’s old but I can tell is good, at the age I am currently at.

Some people fantasize about a childhood they never had or thinks other people’s kids should have a childhoold like they had, probably.

Then you have the Lost Media community focusing on kids shows that even I would think suck back then.

Or how a lot of kids stuff feels like it targets nostalgia heavy 30 year olds with no kids.

There’s some arguments about how people deserve better art, but that only goes back to what I usually brink up in my posts about AI art: Humans made “slop” for years before AI art was a thing.

To save art is to save “some of it” since people always had their own standards for art.

Also, the notion that kids stuff can suck because it’s made with then notion that kids are incomplete human beings.

Which is why “adult art” is important since adults are like the default of mankind.

But certain people online love the idea of being innocent and “cute smol beans” as opposed to strong confident beings that face challenges and responsability.

So they think “adult art” is just “swearing, violence” and they have to choose Disney movies like it’s only 2 options.

2000AD stuff

There’s always a joke like “Harry Potter is just British Naruto” or “Doctor Who is like British One Piece” but honestly, if the UK needs an equivalent to Shounen or moreso Seinen, it should be like 2000AD and certain comics.

Imagine a world where Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, ABC Warriors, Slaine etc got animated series with good animation, action, soundtrack etc.

Specially since in terms of Western animation, a lot of action focused stuff is usually superhero stuff besides the likes of Ben 10 for example.

Because Invincible is neither Marvel or DC but is still a superhero related series.

Whereas something based on Judge Dredd but animated could’ve been a bit more novel.

Shit, if the West needs an equivalent to Akira (Very good animation and details included, even if it takes 20 years to make), you have a comic series perfect for it.
